Alleged Embezzlement of Rs 20 Million: Former Executive of a Tax Consulting Firm Arrested
An investigation into the alleged embezzlement of Rs 20 million from a tax consulting firm has taken a new turn with the arrest of Leenakshi Joysuree, a former team leader at the company in question. This arrest, carried out by the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC), follows the detention of Hemraz Leckraj, the firm's assistant director, who was questioned last Friday.
Suspected of colluding with Hemraz Leckraj, Leenakshi Joysuree has been called to explain a sum of Rs 1.2 million found in her bank account. According to investigators, this discovery stems from an analysis of bank statements obtained during this extensive financial investigation.
On Tuesday morning, the young woman was taken into custody and subjected to an in-depth interrogation at the FCC’s offices in Réduit Triangle. Following this session, she was officially arrested. After spending the night in a police cell, she appeared before the court under a preliminary charge of money laundering, as per Section 3 of the Financial Intelligence and Anti Money Laundering Act (FIAMLA).
The court granted her conditional release upon payment of a bail of Rs 150,000, along with the signing of a debt acknowledgment of Rs 400,000. Strict conditions were imposed, including the requirement to report to the nearest police station to her residence twice a week.
According to FCC investigators, the alleged modus operandi in this case involved the fraudulent use of clients' electronic signatures. These data were reportedly obtained during investment operations conducted by the firm, while both suspects held positions of responsibility. Instructions were then allegedly sent to banking institutions to carry out fund transfers without the knowledge of the concerned clients.
The investigation is ongoing and could lead to further significant developments. Authorities do not rule out the involvement of other individuals, with some names already in the sights of investigators.
