Steven Obeegadoo: "May 1st is a day of remembrance, struggle, and claim"

On the occasion of Labor Day, Steven Obeegadoo from the Militant Platform and Alan Ganoo, leader of the Mauritian Patriotic Movement (MPM), emphasized the unity of activists and the need to preserve the legacy of social struggles in Mauritius. They paid tribute to the leaders at Caudan this Friday.

"We must draw inspiration from the struggles of the past," stated Steven Obeegadoo. He recalled that the former regime of Pravind Jugnauth worked for the working class, notably with the introduction of the minimum wage. In contrast, the former Deputy Prime Minister also mentioned the current high cost of living.

Steven Obeegadoo highlighted the importance of historical figures such as Dr. Maurice Curé, Emmanuel Anquetil, and Pandit Sahadeo, who helped unite workers beyond community divisions to advocate for social justice.

He emphasized the historical significance of May 1st, which he describes as a "day of remembrance, struggle, and claim," recalling that many social benefits—including universal pensions and the minimum wage—are the result of union struggles. In light of the current economic context, he called for continued mobilization to protect these gains and support the most vulnerable.

Meanwhile, Alan Ganoo spoke of a day of reflection and recognition for the great figures of the labor movement, while avoiding any political controversy. He highlighted the unity between generations and movements, particularly honoring the memory of Azor Adélaïde, before laying wreaths in his honor.

Both speakers urged drawing inspiration from past struggles to continue the fight for a fairer society.
