Electricity Wastage: Fines Ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 for Offenders

Starting yesterday, the "Energy Efficiency Regulations 2026" came into effect in the country. This regulation aims to combat electricity wastage.

Decorative lighting on building facades, illuminated advertising panels, the use of air conditioning in unoccupied commercial spaces, inefficient air conditioning systems, decorative fountains, and outdoor sports facility lighting when not in use are prohibited under this regulation.

Certain activities and services are exempt, including hospitals and medical services, emergency services (police and firefighters), public lighting for safety reasons, port and airport infrastructures, water and sanitation services, as well as electricity production and distribution sites, and broadcasting and television.

Non-compliance with these regulations exposes offenders to penalties, including fines ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 and, depending on the severity of the case, imprisonment for up to one year.

The Energy Efficiency Management Office requests public cooperation in reporting any electricity wastage. Cases can be reported via the hotline 8912.
