Formal Notice - Public Humiliation: He Demands Rs 5 Million in Damages from MDFP
A former employee of Mauritius Duty Free Paradise claims he felt humiliated during an incident on December 28, 2025, at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport. He is seeking Rs 5 million in damages from his former employer for the distress caused.
In his formal notice, the complainant explains that he worked in the human resources department of Mauritius Duty Free Paradise (MDFP) before moving to Canada in 2009.
In 1988, while still employed, he accompanied his father to France for eye surgery. Unable to read his boarding pass, his father required his assistance after being allowed to board. However, the situation escalated when the airplane door closed, requiring the flight crew to intervene and have him disembark.
This incident was later reported to his employer, resulting in his suspension. After providing explanations, he was reinstated and worked for MDFP until he immigrated to Canada in 2009.
In December 2025, another incident occurred when he was preparing to return to Canada via London. He was in the departure area of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Airport and entered a MDFP store. An employee allegedly referenced the previous incident in a sarcastic tone, causing laughter among other staff members in front of several passengers.
He describes this situation as a "public humiliation". He believes the incident was captured by surveillance cameras. He adds that he left the country deeply affected. Already receiving medical treatment for stress, this event reportedly worsened his health condition.
Citing Article 1384 of the Civil Code, he states that MDFP is liable for the actions of its employees. He claims that he suffered moral damage, hence his demand for Rs 5 million in damages through a formal notice. If not resolved, he intends to pursue legal action.
