Blue Economy: Arvin Boolell Calls for Mobilization for Sustainable Development
Minister Arvin Boolell has called for collective action to strengthen the blue economy. He spoke yesterday, May 4th, during the Ocean Conference held at the Caudan Arts Centre as part of Mauritius Ocean Week 2026. He reminded attendees that Mauritius, despite its small size, possesses an extensive exclusive economic zone, which offers both opportunities and responsibilities. The ocean economy already accounts for about 10% of the GDP, with significant growth potential in the coming years.
The minister emphasized the need for balanced development, urging the protection of marine ecosystems, particularly coral reefs and mangroves, in the face of challenges such as coastal erosion, declining fish stocks, and illegal fishing. He also highlighted the necessity to better structure the sector through skills, public policies, finance, and innovation, announcing the preparation of a Blue Economy Bill. He called for enhanced collaboration between the state, the private sector, and civil society to ensure the long-term resilience of the ocean economy.
