3,658 Cases of Thefts, Offenses, and Drug-Related Incidents Recorded in Grand-Baie and Poudre-d'Or
During the parliamentary session on May 5, Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam addressed concerns regarding the security situation in constituency number 6, Grand-Baie/Poudre-d’Or. According to the police commissioner’s report, most reported incidents are concentrated in high-traffic areas such as Grand-Baie, Goodlands, Cap-Malheureux, Grand-Gaube, and Poudre-d’Or. The incidents primarily involve thefts, public disturbances, antisocial behavior, and drug-related activities.
The Prime Minister noted that the police have strengthened their security strategy by increasing patrols in sensitive areas, setting up roadblocks, and conducting targeted operations led by the CID, ADSU, SMF, and SSU. There are also plans for enhanced surveillance through the Safe City system and community policing programs. These operations have resulted in multiple arrests, the disruption of drug distribution networks, seizures of cannabis, heroin, and synthetic drugs, as well as the dismantling of illegal plantations.
From January 1 to April 30, 2026, a total of 3,658 police cases were recorded in this area. This includes 153 crimes, 1,112 minor offenses, 2,354 traffic violations, and 39 drug-related infractions. In a follow-up question, there was a request for the permanent assignment of at least two motorcyclists from the Traffic Branch to the police stations in Goodlands and Grand-Baie to intercept motorcyclists evading checkpoints. Navin Ramgoolam replied that this would depend on the available resources and the upcoming arrival of new motorcycles.
