Île-aux-Bénitiers Reopens: Relief for Boaters and Merchants

The Île-aux-Bénitiers has reopened to the public, bringing relief to boaters and merchants after being closed for two months for extensive cleaning. This reopening, which took place on Monday, June 16, 2025, follows a collaborative effort involving the state, local authorities, environmental associations, boaters, and engaged citizens.

During the closure, the island underwent cleaning, reorganization, and the installation of new management structures. A code of conduct will be introduced to regulate activities on the site, aiming to protect its biodiversity and better manage tourism.

Virginia Lamarque, a boat owner, expressed her relief: "The reopening of the island is a huge relief for everyone, as we haven’t been able to set foot on it for almost three months." She noted that merchants arrived as early as 6 AM due to the low tide.

For her, the island is much more than just a workplace: "It’s a part of our history, the lives of everyone who works there. We’ve raised our children there, shared significant moments, and lived with the sea, the sun, the seasons, and our encounters."

She praised the work done, particularly the construction of new dry toilets by the Ministry of Environment officials. She observed a collective awareness: "You can feel that things are moving in the right direction. Everyone feels more responsible, like guardians of the island's environment."

Boat owners and merchants play a crucial role as they are present every day and can immediately intervene in case of misconduct. Virginia urged her colleagues to remain vigilant: "Let’s take care of the island, alert, clean, educate customers and the public. And I invite visitors: leave nothing on the island, take your waste with you."

Jessica, a merchant, emphasized that the island empowers women entrepreneurs and allows her to earn a decent living. She is thrilled to resume her activities.

Joanna Bérenger, Junior Minister of Environment, stated, "It’s a day of celebration." She thanked everyone who contributed to this success and expressed her joy in witnessing the site's beauty again, empathizing with those whose activities were halted during the closure.

This reopening marks the beginning of more sustainable and inclusive management, aiming to preserve this exceptional natural heritage while maintaining public access.
