Online Scams: The Bank of Mauritius Warns Against a Wave of Fake Messages

The Bank of Mauritius is sounding the alarm over a surge in scam attempts circulating through emails, phone calls, and social media. In a statement released on Wednesday, May 13, the central bank warns the public about fraudulent messages impersonating banks, financial institutions, public agencies, or individuals whose accounts have been hacked.

According to the Bank of Mauritius, scammers aim to trap their victims by encouraging them to transfer money or make payments under the pretext of rewards, financial aid, winnings, or administrative processes. In light of this situation, the central bank urges the population to remain vigilant and emphasizes the importance of verifying the authenticity of any suspicious message or call before responding.

Authorities also recommend immediately reporting any scam attempts to the police and relevant agencies. The Bank of Mauritius further reminds that a list of major financial scams is available on its website in the financial education section.
