Michaël Sik Yuen: "Medical tourism represents a niche market within our tourism offerings..."

In a statement to the National Assembly on May 12, Minister of Commerce and Consumer Protection Michaël Sik Yuen clarified the government's strategy to position Mauritius as a hub for medical tourism. He emphasized that "medical tourism represents a niche market within our tourism offerings..." Currently, this sector attracts over 4,000 foreign patients each year, with around 1,000 coming from Africa, Seychelles, Madagascar, and Comoros.

According to Michaël Sik Yuen, since August 2025, the Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with the Economic Development Board, has been working on a structured action plan to invigorate this market. The project aims to promote the destination, increase investments in health infrastructure, and foster synergies between care providers and the hospitality sector. However, the minister pointed out that the preparation of this plan has highlighted five major obstacles to the growth of this sector.
