Piton: A Woman Arrested for Electronic Fraud via WhatsApp

On May 14, the Cybercrime Unit of the Central Criminal Investigation Department (CCID) arrested a 38-year-old woman in Piton as part of an investigation into electronic fraud committed via WhatsApp.

The victim had her WhatsApp account hacked and was tricked into providing a verification code to an unidentified individual. Once the account was compromised, fraudulent messages were sent to her contacts, soliciting money transfers.

Investigators were able to identify the suspect, believed to be connected to a network involved in receiving and redistributing funds obtained from this scam. After her arrest, the woman appeared in the Rivière-du-Rempart District Court on the same day, where she was provisionally charged with "aiding and abetting in the commission of a crime". She has been taken back to police custody. The investigation is ongoing.
