[Rodrigues] Online Safety for Youth: Discussions on Increasing Risks
The threats faced by children and young people on the Internet were the focus of discussions during the recent official visit of the Minister of Information Technology, Communication, and Innovation to Rodrigues. During the Cabinet meeting on Friday, June 5, the government stated that this visit allowed for an assessment of the current needs of the island as well as the areas where support could be provided by the ministry and its affiliated organizations.
During his visit, the minister met with the commissioner responsible for the information technology and telecommunications sector, representatives from the Education Commission, and several officials from the Rodrigues Regional Assembly. Visits were also made to Rodrigues College and Grande Montagne College, where interactive sessions were organized with students. A meeting brought together school heads, representatives from student councils, and presidents of parent associations from primary and secondary schools in Rodrigues.
According to the official document from the Cabinet, discussions focused on "the growing online threats and risks faced by children and young people," as well as the shared responsibility of parents, educators, service providers, and the community in creating a safe and secure digital environment for children.
However, the Cabinet report does not mention any new measures, reforms, or specific decisions arising from these consultations in Rodrigues. It mainly highlights the concerns expressed about the digital safety of minors and the need for collective mobilization in response to the challenges posed by the online environment.
