Renewable Energy: OmniPV1, a New Agrivoltaic Power Plant Inaugurated in Poudre-d’Or

Mauritius is advancing its energy transition with the commissioning of OmniPV1, an agrivoltaic solar power plant inaugurated on June 4, 2026, in Poudre-d’Or. The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy, and Fisheries, Arvin Boolell, along with representatives from partner companies.

According to the guidelines set in the Ministry of Energy and Public Utilities' Integrated Electricity Plan 2022-2030, which aims for a significant increase in renewable production capacity to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels, the installation has a capacity of 4.8 MWp and covers nearly four hectares. It is expected to generate around 7,700 MWh of electricity annually, while significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The project is led by Omnicane Ltd, Mauritius Commercial Bank (MCB), and Calycé International through the joint venture Omnicane-Calycé JV Ltd. Its uniqueness lies in its agrivoltaic model, which combines agricultural activities with solar energy production on the same land. This approach promotes more efficient land use while contributing to the country's environmental goals.

During the inauguration, Arvin Boolell highlighted the challenges related to energy security and Mauritius's dependence on fuel imports. He advocated for strengthened collaboration between the public and private sectors to accelerate the development of renewable energies. The minister also emphasized the importance of leveraging local resources, particularly biomass and bagasse, as well as developing storage capacities to better manage the intermittency of renewable sources.

For the authorities, OmniPV1 aligns with efforts to diversify the national energy mix, increase clean electricity production, and support the transition towards a more resilient and low-carbon economy.
