MauPass: The Ministry of ICT Denies Any Collection of Biometric Data

The Ministry of Information, Communication and Innovation (ICT) has clarified, in a statement issued on Tuesday, June 24, that MauPass, like other government applications, does not collect or process any biometric data.

The ministry emphasizes that all digital projects, including MauPass, are conducted with a focus on consultation, transparency, and continuous improvement. It stresses a crucial point: no fingerprints or facial recognition are required to access the services offered. The biometric functions activated on certain phones are solely related to the manufacturer’s settings and are in no way associated with MauPass.

This clarification is already reflected in the updated terms of use, revised since June 14, 2025, available on the application and the official website. The disclaimer regarding third-party technologies has also been revised for greater clarity.

Concerning the clauses on liability and confidentiality, the ICT ministry specifies that they comply with international standards for digital services.

The ministry also highlights the cybersecurity governance mechanisms already in place. Regular audits are conducted in accordance with the Cybersecurity and Cybercrime Act 2021, notably by the MITCI Security Unit. A complete audit of the MauPass platform is also planned following the latest updates.

The supervisory ministry reaffirms its commitment to building a safe, inclusive, and citizen-oriented digital environment. It invites the public to continue the dialogue and actively participate in public consultations.
