Over the past few weeks, chocolate prices have risen by Rs 10 to more than Rs 150 depending on the brand, especially for imported chocolates such as 100-gram bars and assorted varieties. A notable price increase is seen with Lindt Dark Chocolate, which previously averaged Rs 170 and is now priced at Rs 326. Similarly, KitKat White 4 Fingers has increased by over 50%.

Yannick Lew Yew Yim, quality manager at Super U, confirms the extent of these increases, stating, "There is an increase of 50% to 90% on almost all chocolate brands." He emphasizes that this rise is not limited to a single range but affects the entire section, including both affordable and premium products. At SaveMart, CEO Vicky Hanoomanjee reports a similar situation, citing Lindt Swiss Classic Milk 100g, which has gone from Rs 185.95 to Rs 275.

"Other products, such as Lindt Milk Raisin or Lindor Single White, are also seeing increases of over Rs 70," he adds.

Global Cocoa Price Increase

While some consumers are linking this price surge to the upcoming sugar tax, other factors are also at play. Assad Peerbux, manager of Intermart in Beau-Bassin, states that the main cause is the rising price of cocoa on the global market. "Cocoa prices have risen sharply internationally, and this increase is inevitably passed on to all chocolate products," he explains. He adds that the implementation of the sugar tax starting October 1 will only exacerbate this trend.

Thus, even before the new tax measures take effect, consumers should brace for a significant increase in chocolate prices, which may continue in the coming months.

Addition of Chocolate and Ice Cream to the List

Starting October 1, 2025, the excise duty on sugary products will also be extended to chocolates and ice creams, as announced in the 2025-2026 Budget.
