Phenomenon Observed in the Southeast: A Waterspout Intrigues Internet Users, Here’s Everything You Need to Know!

A resident of Grand-Sable in the Southeast captured stunning images of a waterspout. From her terrace, she observed the formation of the phenomenon before climbing onto her roof to immortalize it.

"It started with clouds that grew larger, spread out, and descended towards the water. It looked like a tornado forming," she recounts.

Tornado or Waterspout?

Yashvir Ramlukon, a meteorologist at the Vacoas weather service, explains the difference: a tornado forms on land, while a waterspout develops above the ocean.

"It is a column of rotating warm air that forms over a body of water. These warm, humid, and unstable atmospheric conditions promote the formation of active clouds that can develop into cumulonimbus," he specifies.

At the base of this cumulonimbus, a funnel cloud forms and expands upon reaching the surface of the sea. "This phenomenon can be dangerous, as it is often accompanied by thunder and lightning. A waterspout can last between 30 and 40 minutes," adds the meteorologist.

An Unpredictable Phenomenon

Unlike other weather phenomena, a waterspout cannot be predicted, emphasizes Yashvir Ramlukon. It can only be observed once it begins to form.
