Alteo Opens Its New Smart Greenhouses in Union Flacq

As part of its agricultural diversification strategy, Alteo officially inaugurated four new greenhouses in Union Flacq on July 21st. This expansion of Alteo's Smart Farm now covers a greenhouse area of 15,000 m², exclusively dedicated to tomato production.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Fabien de Marassé Enouf, CEO of Alteo, the Honorable Dr. Arvin Boolell, Minister of Agro-Industry, as well as Arnaud Marrier d’Unienville, CEO of Alteo Agri Ltd, local MPs from constituency no. 9, and the group's teams.

With an additional 9,000 m² and cutting-edge technology, these greenhouses represent a significant step forward in developing sustainable and resilient local agriculture. They are equipped with automated climate control systems (automatic shading, ventilation, integrated weather sensors, etc.), optimizing growing conditions throughout the year.

"This new phase introduces state-of-the-art greenhouses: climate automation supported by an integrated weather station, enhanced structures, and elevated safety devices... These advancements reflect our commitment to combine innovation, safety, and agronomic performance. As a key player in the region, we aim to rethink local agriculture to provide innovative and sustainable solutions that enhance the country's independence and regenerate the vitality and authenticity of our lands," stated Arnaud Marrier d’Unienville.

This expansion brings the total production capacity of the unit to 450 tons of vegetables per year, with the ambition to reach 1,500 tons within the next five years. In addition to tomatoes, trials for growing lettuce and bell peppers are currently underway.

"These greenhouses are a tangible representation of Alteo's purpose: Making the East an Everlasting Place to Grow. We aim to sustainably contribute to the development of the East and provide more opportunities for its residents. To date, our investments in this production unit located in Union Flacq amount to around a hundred million rupees, for a total capacity of 450 tons of produce... Our ambition in this sector is strong, and we have set a goal to reach a production of 1,500 tons in five years," emphasized Fabien de Marassé Enouf.

Minister Arvin Boolell praised Alteo's initiative:

"The group is a role model that clearly illustrates what can and must be done. This sector is undergoing significant reform, and it is essential to encourage initiatives that lead to sustainable modernization. Innovation and technology must be part of our collective response. Change is necessary, and with everyone's willingness, we can build the future of the agricultural sector together."

Local and Responsible Agriculture under the Origin’Est Brand

The products from the Smart Farm are marketed under the Origin’Est brand, launched in 2024 by Alteo. This brand encompasses products from reasoned agriculture: tomatoes and lettuce grown in greenhouses without synthetic pesticides, venison raised in semi-freedom and exclusively fed grass.

Combining innovation and expertise, the brand embodies the group's commitment to healthier, local, and sustainable food while supporting the economy of the East of the island.
