Alleged Violence at Melrose Prison: 50% of CCTV Footage Reviewed and Secured, About Thirty Inmates Interviewed

Investigations into the events that occurred at Melrose Prison on Thursday, July 17, are progressing. As of today, the National Preventive Mechanism Division (NPMD), part of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), has reviewed and secured half of the footage captured by the prison's surveillance cameras.

This information was confirmed by the organization in a statement released on Friday, July 25.

The incidents date back a week. Families of inmates publicly reported physical violence allegedly occurring within the prison itself. This claim was immediately denied by the prison management. "No one was beaten," reacted Dev Jokhoo, the prison commissioner, to the Défi Media Group.

The viewing operations will continue on Saturday, July 26. All footage will be sealed for the investigation. About thirty inmates have already been interviewed by NPMD investigators.

A new phase of the investigation will commence on Tuesday, July 29, with hearings involving members of the staff and officials from Melrose Prison.

The NHRC has indicated that it will provide regular updates on this investigation, which will result in a detailed report and recommendations to the relevant authorities.
