Ministerial Visit to Île-aux-Bénitiers: The Cleaning Campaign Continues

This Sunday, several ministers visited Île-aux-Bénitiers to assess the progress of the cleaning and debris collection efforts.

Speaking to the press, Deputy Prime Minister Paul Bérenger stated that the government had agreed to temporarily equip the environment and enhance cleaning operations. He specified that the 'Master Plan' falls under the responsibility of the Ministry of Housing and Lands.

"We have done our best with the operators. The goal is not to exclude anyone, but to ensure a cleaner environment," he said. He also emphasized that during the interim period, intermediaries must take responsibility for managing their waste.

Tourism Minister Richard Duval commended the "extraordinary work" achieved. He highlighted that, when approached by boat, the progress of the work can be seen from afar, but also noted that there are 52 islands that require attention.

Furthermore, according to Richard Duval, this government is taking action, unlike the previous one, which he claims did nothing for ten years.

Fabrice David, Junior Minister of Agro-Industry, reminded everyone that a first visit took place on January 10, and three and a half months later, initial changes are visible. He emphasized that Île-aux-Bénitiers is a tourist gem, and the government aims to ensure the preservation of endemic species and to develop green ecotourism.

Meanwhile, Shakeel Mohamed, Minister of Housing and Lands, reported that approximately 90 tons of waste had already been removed. He noted that much work remains, as the island needs to be completely cleaned.

According to him, with the work already done, it is a jewel restored. He added that the objective is to protect the environment while enhancing our tourist heritage for all Mauritians. He then called for patience from the operators and assured that solutions would be found to balance the island's cleaning with maintaining economic activity.
