Mauritius Elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council with the Highest Number of Votes
Mauritius topped the list with 181 votes out of 190 cast at the United Nations Human Rights Council. The election took place at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, October 14, 2025. Mauritius will serve as a member of the Human Rights Council from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2028.
The term on the Council is for three years and can be renewed once. Mauritius was a member of the Council from 2006 to 2012. Thus, Mauritius will serve its third term as a member of this subsidiary body of the United Nations General Assembly, based in Geneva.
Being elected with the highest number of votes highlights the recognition of Mauritius in the field of human rights and reflects the trust of states in Mauritius. The Mauritian government will continue to work towards the promotion and protection of human rights and respect for international law.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration, and International Trade wishes to thank all countries that supported Mauritius’ candidacy.
