Mauritius Elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council with the Most Votes
Mauritius has been elected at the top of the list with 181 votes out of 190 cast in the United Nations Human Rights Council. This was revealed in a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade on Tuesday, October 14.
The elections took place at the United Nations General Assembly on the same day. Mauritius will serve as a member of the Human Rights Council from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2028.
The term on the Council is three years, renewable once. Mauritius was a member of the Council from 2006 to 2012. Thus, Mauritius will serve a third term as a member of this subsidiary body of the United Nations General Assembly based in Geneva.
"Being elected at the top of the list illustrates the recognition of Mauritius in the field of human rights, as well as the trust that states have in Mauritius. The Mauritian government will continue to work for the promotion and protection of human rights and respect for international law," the statement reads.
