Cyclone Chenge: Preventive Measures in Place in Agaléga
The Disaster Committee of Agaléga convened at 11 AM on Thursday, October 23rd, at the community center in Village Vingt-Cinq, Agaléga. The meeting was chaired by the Resident Manager of the Outer Islands Development Corporation (OIDC), with the participation of the Assistant Resident Manager and representatives from the South Island. This information comes from a press release issued by the OIDC.
During the meeting, the meteorological technician reported that the cyclone has weakened and is now a moderate tropical storm. It is located approximately 280 km east of Agaléga and is moving at a speed of 15 km/h. Heavy rains and winds are expected from Thursday evening until Friday afternoon.
The Disaster Committee confirmed that evacuation drills to the shelter centers on the North and South Islands took place between 2 PM and 5 PM.
A post-cyclone meeting will be held later to assess the situation and plan recovery actions.
The OIDC reassures the public that all necessary measures are in place, and the situation is being closely monitored in coordination with the Mauritius Meteorological Services and the National Risk and Disaster Management Center (NDRRMC).
