Serious Accident on the Highway in Riche-Terre: A Chinese Worker Loses Leg After Violent Collision

A serious accident occurred on the highway in Riche-Terre, where a 48-year-old Chinese worker had his right leg amputated after a road accident on Monday afternoon. The incident took place around 3 PM. The man, along with a fellow worker, both employed by a Chinese company operating in the country, was leaving Port-Louis to head to Terre-Rouge in a 4x4 vehicle. According to initial reports, they were returning to their dormitory located in Mahogany when tragedy struck.

At the Riche-Terre highway, the 4x4 veered off the road and crashed into the metal safety barrier separating the lanes. The front of the vehicle suffered severe damage, with the bumper and engine crushed, and a traffic sign was knocked down. Emergency services including the Terre-Rouge police, firefighters, and SAMU were dispatched to the scene immediately. The driver was unharmed, but his colleague was less fortunate.

Due to the force of the impact, he sustained serious injuries to his right foot, with part of it reportedly severed. He was quickly attended to by rescue services. Seriously injured in the legs, he received initial care from the SAMU team and firefighters. They meticulously extracted him from the wrecked vehicle and stabilized his right leg with a splint. He was then safely transported to SSRN Hospital in Pamplemousses, where he was admitted to intensive care and placed on respiratory assistance.

The driver, still in shock, underwent a breathalyzer test which returned negative results. After being questioned in the presence of a company representative, he was allowed to leave but must remain available for questioning by the Terre-Rouge police investigators.
