World Diabetes Day: Every Hospital to Soon Have a Specialized Diabetes Center

On World Diabetes Day, celebrated on November 14, Anil Bachoo highlighted the severity of diabetes in Mauritius, stating, "This disease is rampant in Mauritius. Last year, 2,709 Mauritians lost their battle against diabetes."

The Minister of Health emphasized that globally, over 3.4 million people have died due to this disease. He expressed concern over screening results from secondary schools, revealing that a worrying number of youths are already in a pre-diabetic state.

"We are taking concrete measures and continuing our awareness campaigns across the island. Every hospital will soon have a specialized diabetes center, including care for foot-related complications. The government is taking this situation very seriously," he asserted.

According to Anil Bachoo, the next diabetes center will be inaugurated at Jeetoo Hospital, followed by those at SSR Hospital, while the center in the South is already operational.

Anishta Babooram, Junior Minister of Health, echoed these sentiments, stressing that many Mauritians are living with diabetes without their knowledge due to a lack of screening. "We need to reconsider our diets to avoid becoming victims of diabetes or worsening our condition," she stated. She added that the state is also taking responsibility by implementing various measures to effectively combat this chronic disease, which affects an increasing number of Mauritian households.
