World Diabetes Day: 490 Secondary School Students Identified as Prediabetic, Says Anil Bachoo
On Friday, November 14, 2025, Health and Wellness Minister Anil Bachoo called for renewed shared responsibility to act early, support all generations, and protect the nation from the long-term consequences of diabetes during the launch of activities for World Diabetes Day 2025. These activities include medical examinations, screenings, exhibitions, and advice on non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
Also present at the event were Deputy Minister Anishta Babooram and the representative of the World Health Organization in Mauritius, Dr. Anne-Marie Ancia.
In his speech, the Health Minister stated that this symbolic day unites the global community in its common commitment to prevent and control the most urgent health challenges of our time. Emphasizing this year's theme, "Diabetes at All Stages of Life," he highlighted that diabetes can affect individuals at any age, and thus our response must be comprehensive and ongoing.
Regarding the alarming situation of high diabetes prevalence in Mauritius, Bachoo pointed out that in 2025 alone, 2,709 Mauritians died due to diabetes, representing 22.3% of all deaths. "One in five adults in Mauritius lives with diabetes, and about a quarter of those with diabetes are unaware of their condition," he noted.
He further mentioned that during the national school screening program of 2025, approximately 490 secondary school students were identified as prediabetic, while 32 were already diagnosed with diabetes.
According to him, this clearly shows that diabetes can affect anyone from childhood to adulthood, adding that prevention, early detection, and healthy lifestyle habits remain the best defenses.
Reiterating the Ministry's strategy, which focuses on prevention, screening, and quality care—manifested through key measures such as health campaigns, increasing the sugar tax, and establishing five regional diabetes centers—Bachoo reminded everyone of their responsibility to adopt healthy habits.
