The Renewal of the Police Commissioner’s Contract at the Heart of the Cabinet Meeting This Friday

The renewal of the Police Commissioner's contract is set to be a key topic during the Cabinet meeting this Friday, November 14.

As the expiration date of Police Commissioner Rampersad Sooroojebally's contract approaches, the government is preparing to make a decision. This matter will be discussed during the Cabinet meeting.

Rampersad Sooroojebally, who took over the Central Barracks on November 15 of last year, is currently at the center of intense discussions. Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam is facing internal pressures for a change in police leadership.

The Cabinet's deliberations will be crucial in determining whether to renew the current Commissioner's contract. According to available information, the Prime Minister is likely to continue supporting him. In June, in response to a question from opposition leader Joe Lesjongard about a possible renewal, Navin Ramgoolam praised the "work accomplished" by Rampersad Sooroojebally, stating that as long as he performs his duties well, he will remain in position.

With forty-two years of experience within the police force, Rampersad Sooroojebally has held several strategic positions. A former Deputy Commissioner of Police, he has led the Anti-Narcotics Brigade, the VIP Security Unit, and the Counter Terrorism Unit. He was also a member of the GIPM and part of Pope John Paul II's security detail during the papal visit in 1989.

The Police Press Office has declined to comment on the matter, emphasizing that the decision lies with the Prime Minister's Office.

Will Rampersad Sooroojebally be reappointed as the head of the Central Barracks? The answer is expected after the Cabinet meeting.

As for Dev Jokhoo, appointed as Commissioner of Prisons last April for a two-year term, no discussions about a potential renewal are planned at this stage.
