Heated Exchange in Parliament: Adrien Duval Claims Shakeel Mohamed's Apology Is "Not Enough"

In a heated exchange in Parliament, Adrien Duval criticized what he described as a recurring strategy by certain members of the ruling majority: to provoke and hurl insults to distract from sensitive questions facing the government. This reaction followed an apology from Shakeel Mohamed for inappropriate behavior toward Duval during a session of the National Assembly on Tuesday.

Speaking on RadioPlus on Thursday morning, November 27, the Minister of Housing and Lands stated that he had apologized to the Opposition Whip after this tumultuous exchange, which he attributed to "insulting remarks" from the blue deputy.

In a message addressed to the media in response to Shakeel Mohamed, Adrien Duval emphasized that this environment allowed the Minister of Sports to evade answering a question regarding a recording. The blue deputy believes that this undermining of the democratic function of Parliament is "irreparable."

While he insists he holds no personal grudges against Shakeel Mohamed, he believes that the apologies offered do not undermine the opposition's right to hold the government accountable.

As a reminder, the parliamentary session on Tuesday, November 25, briefly rekindled the tense atmosphere that prevailed under the previous government. For the first time during her term, Speaker Shirin Aumeeruddy-Cziffra had to suspend proceedings.

The incident erupted following a question from Franco Quirin directed at the Youth and Sports Minister, Deven Nagalingum, concerning a recording related to the Mauritian Olympic Committee's electoral general assembly. The minister asserted that no investigation could be initiated until the authenticity of the document was confirmed.

This response triggered a strong reaction from Adrien Duval, who denounced unfair treatment. His intervention quickly escalated into a heated exchange with Shakeel Mohamed, who did not hesitate to recall his past experience as Speaker.
