The Contested Transfer of Mami Ravatomanga

The Contested Transfer of Mami Ravatomanga

A highly anticipated decision from Magistrate Prashant Bissoon is set for this Monday regarding the fate of Malagasy businessman Mami Ravatomanga. Will he be transferred to Melrose prison or remain in police custody, given his reportedly concerning health condition?

Last Thursday, the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) requested his transfer to the high-security Melrose prison. The commission believes there is no justification for keeping Mami Ravatomanga in police custody. However, this request is met with strong opposition from the defense.

The billionaire's lawyers argue that their client is still unwell and must continue his treatment at a clinic. They assert that his health condition does not allow him to be placed in a prison environment, even under heightened surveillance. Last Friday, after leaving the Premium clinic, the businessman was placed in a cell at the Moka detention center. But by the next day, Saturday, he had to be put under observation at Victoria Hospital.

Weight Loss

The defense maintains that any attempt to transfer him to prison would be incompatible with Mami Ravatomanga's current physical condition. They state the billionaire requires constant medical supervision. His treating physician, Dr. Aniff Yearoo, testified to clarify his patient's clinical situation. He explained that Mami Ravatomanga suffers from three blocked arteries and that an angiography was performed on two of them. He added that the patient's overall condition has deteriorated, noting a loss of nearly ten kilograms in just a few days, along with persistent pain.

To determine the capacity of Melrose prison to accommodate sick inmates, FCC lawyers brought in Assistant Superintendent Alex Casimir from Melrose prison. He indicated that the facility has suitable medical infrastructure, staffed by trained personnel, including doctors. According to his explanations, the prison would be capable of providing the necessary care to inmates with health issues. After hearing arguments from both sides, Magistrate Prashant Bissoon will have to make a ruling this Monday. His decision will determine whether Mami Ravatomanga will continue his care in a hospital setting or be transferred under high security to Melrose prison.
