Emtel Resolves Historic Dispute and Secures Rs 800 Million Compensation
On December 1st, Emtel announced the conclusion of a 29-year-old dispute with Mauritius Telecom Ltd, Cellplus Mobile Communications Ltd, and the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (ICTA). Emtel has accepted a total and final compensation of Rs 800 million, bringing to an end one of the longest and most complex disputes in the Mauritian telecommunications sector.
This resolution follows a key decision made by the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council on April 22, 2024, which was favorable to Emtel. In its findings, the Privy Council urged operators and the regulator to reconsider their positions, emphasizing the importance of aligning with the statutory objectives of the ICTA and the public interest. This recommendation paved the way for negotiations that led to the announced agreement.
Emtel appreciates the constructive role played by all parties involved, believing that this settlement will now allow a focus on developing essential infrastructures to maintain Mauritius' competitive edge in a rapidly changing digital world.
