Compensation of Rs 800 million to Emtel: Rs 400 million to be paid by Mauritius Telecom

Mauritius Telecom (MT) and Emtel have officially resolved a dispute that lasted nearly three decades. The historical operator announced the signing of a friendly agreement that ends a legal procedure initiated in 1997.

Under the terms of the agreement, Emtel will receive a total of Rs 800 million. Rs 400 million will be paid by MT and its mobile subsidiary Cellplus, while the ICTA will contribute Rs 400 million.

This settlement avoids further legal proceedings after a process that extended to the Privy Council in 2024.

From MT's side, they assert that "this decision reflects our desire to move forward and build an inclusive digital ecosystem," emphasizes CEO Veemal Gungadin.

This resolution comes a few months after a key decision by the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, delivered on April 22, 2024, in favor of Emtel. In its findings, the Privy Council urged operators and regulators to reconsider their positions, reminding them of the importance of aligning with the statutory objectives of the ICTA and the public interest. This recommendation paved the way for negotiations that led to the announced agreement.
