Chagos Dossier: New Obstacle in the Reversion Process

The House of Lords is examining a report highlighting concerns expressed by Chagossians regarding the agreement between the UK and Mauritius over the Chagos Archipelago.

A report from the International Relations and Defence Committee of the House of Lords presents findings from a survey conducted among Chagossians in the UK, Mauritius, Seychelles, and other countries. This consultation aimed to gather their opinions on decisions directly affecting their future, as part of the agreement made between London and Port Louis.

The results reveal a deep sense of injustice and distrust. The report emphasizes that many Chagossians feel systematically sidelined in decisions regarding their homeland and express a strong desire to actively participate in decision-making and restoration processes.

Over 3,000 responses were collected online, despite time and methodological constraints. On November 11, 2025, the British government and the Conservative Party requested this committee to gather the views of Chagossians. A survey was then launched in English, French, and Mauritian Creole to provide them with a platform for expression. According to Lord de Mauley, the committee's chairman, Chagossians claim to be marginalized during negotiations, and these responses cannot replace a comprehensive government consultation.

The report highlights several key conclusions, including a call for direct compensation, enhanced support, and representation of Chagossians in the decision-making process. It also notes a significant distrust towards the Mauritian government and concerns about the agreement, particularly regarding the lack of guarantees and transparency.

Finally, despite practical obstacles, Chagossians reaffirm their desire to return to their lands and demand active participation in the management of the £40 million fund intended to improve their living conditions and support the preservation of the archipelago.
