Chagossians in the UK Announce an 'Exiled Government'
The Chagos issue is taking a new turn. Chagossians living in the UK have announced the formation of an 'exiled government' with the aim of preventing the return of the Chagos archipelago to Mauritius and to elect their own Prime Minister. This was reported by The Telegraph in its online edition on Tuesday, December 16.
While Mauritius completes the sovereignty process, Chagossians based in Great Britain have elected an interim Prime Minister, Misley Mandarin, according to the British newspaper The Telegraph. They claim they want to remain British citizens and assert their right to self-determination under British sovereignty.
This initiative aims to put pressure on the House of Lords, which is set to deliberate on the treaty signed in May by Keir Starmer, which stipulates the return of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. The British Chagossians also cite regional security concerns, particularly regarding Diego Garcia, which hosts a strategic military base.
