Vision 2050: The Prime Minister Calls for an Evolution of the Economy Towards Better-Paid Jobs

On Thursday, December 18, 2025, Prime Minister Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam launched national consultations on Vision 2050 at the Paul Octave Wiehe Auditorium in Reduit. These consultations, which will last for four months, are a long-term strategic planning exercise aligned with the government program for 2025-2029, aimed at laying the groundwork for transitioning the country from an upper-middle-income to a high-income nation through an inclusive and sustainable program.

Three key pillars of national development have been identified as the overarching themes of the consultations: wealth, sustainability, and inclusion.

The Minister of Financial Services and Economic Planning, Dr. Jyoti Jeetun, along with ministers, members of the National Assembly, diplomats, industry leaders, and other dignitaries attended the event organized by the Ministry of Financial Services and Economic Planning.

In his speech, the Prime Minister emphasized that Vision 2050 is not a passive forecast but an active manifesto that balances the immediate needs of the country with inclusive and sustainable growth. He highlighted that Vision 2050 will place families at the heart of development, ensuring that every citizen has access to the same opportunities.

He stressed the necessity of joining the club of advanced economies by 2050 by appropriately adopting technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and digital services. "It is essential to invest in upgrading the skills of the local workforce and ensuring that all citizens, from seasoned professionals to young students, are equipped with these tools," he stated.

Dr. Navin Ramgoolam also insisted on the need to evolve the economy towards a high-wage model by creating resilient jobs in areas such as FinTech and medical sciences, among others. He indicated that Vision 2050 will focus on expanding the economy while ensuring the well-being of every citizen.

According to the Prime Minister, Vision 2050 must, among other things: open new growth engines such as AI, digital services, the blue economy, renewable energies, the creative industry, advanced manufacturing, green and sustainable finance, and high-value tourism; rethink education and lifelong learning; strengthen climate resilience; accelerate the transition to renewable energies; promote sustainable and circular agriculture; ensure the protection of lagoons and marine ecosystems; commit to strong and accessible healthcare; reaffirm common values of respect, justice, meritocracy, and tolerance; promote active citizenship; deepen democracy; and modernize public administration.
