The Expertise of the Diaspora in Neonatology for Public Hospitals

On Tuesday, December 30th, the Minister of Health and Wellness, Anil Bachoo, visited the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Victoria Hospital in Candos. He was accompanied by Dr. Kaushik Mangroo, a Mauritian pediatrician specializing in neonatology, currently practicing in Ireland. Dr. Mangroo is on a mission to Mauritius to help improve the care of newborns and infants in public hospitals. He will meet with medical teams to identify concrete measures to strengthen neonatal services and contribute to reducing infant mortality in the country.

Anil Bachoo expressed his gratitude to Dr. Mangroo for his valuable assistance in enhancing neonatal care in public hospitals. He appreciates the positive response from the Mauritian diaspora, whose members possess valuable skills and rich experience in various fields, to the government's call for contributions to improve the services and performance of the country's healthcare system. Regarding the high infant mortality rate in Mauritius, the minister indicated that medical equipment is being modernized and services are being enhanced. He also reminded that Mauritius is receiving assistance and support from foreign experts.

For his part, Dr. Mangroo emphasized his commitment to contributing to the development of his homeland. He stressed that his mission is to support the government's efforts to further improve public health services for infants and premature babies. He also highlighted his determination to work closely with public health staff to help reduce the country's infant mortality rate, which currently stands at 14 deaths per 1,000 live births, compared to two deaths per 1,000 live births in developed countries.
