The Expertise of the Diaspora Supporting Neonatology in Public Hospitals

On Tuesday, December 30th, Health and Wellness Minister Anil Bachoo visited the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Victoria Hospital in Candos. He was accompanied by Dr. Kaushik Mangroo, a Mauritian pediatrician specializing in neonatology who currently practices in Ireland. Dr. Mangroo is on a mission in Mauritius to enhance the care provided to newborns and infants in public hospitals. He will meet with medical teams to identify concrete measures to strengthen neonatology services and help reduce infant mortality in the country.

Anil Bachoo expressed gratitude to Dr. Mangroo for his valuable assistance in improving neonatal care in public hospitals. He appreciates the positive response from the Mauritian diaspora, whose members possess invaluable skills and rich experience across various fields, to the government’s call for contributions to enhance the nation’s healthcare services and performance. Regarding the high infant mortality rate in Mauritius, the minister noted that medical equipment is being modernized and services are being improved. He reminded that Mauritius also benefits from the assistance and support of foreign experts.

For his part, Dr. Mangroo emphasized his commitment to contributing to the development of his homeland. He stressed that his mission is to support the government’s efforts to further improve public health services for infants and premature babies. He also reiterated his determination to work closely with public health staff to help reduce the country’s infant mortality rate, which currently stands at 14 deaths per 1,000 live births, compared to two deaths per 1,000 live births in developed countries.
