Title: Education: Mauritian Creole to be Introduced at A-Level from 2026

Content: The Mauritian Creole language reaches a historic milestone as it will now be taught and assessed at the A-Level. The Ministry of Education has outlined the admission criteria, certification options, qualification requirements, and subject combinations, along with the educational resources available.

The Ministry of Education has announced the introduction of Mauritian Creole (MC) as a core subject at the A-Level starting in 2026, with the first examination session scheduled for October/November 2027.

According to Regulation No. 15 of the Education Act of 1957, a student born between 2000 and 2016 who turns 21 during a school year may remain in a secondary school until the end of that academic year. However, to be admitted to Grade 12 in 2026, students must not have turned 20 by January 1, 2026.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet one of the following two conditions:

  • Hold a Cambridge School Certificate (SC) with at least one pass in English and a minimum of three credits, including one credit in MC at the National School Certificate (NSC) level in the same session.
  • Or have passed the Cambridge General Certificate of Education (GCE O-Level) in at least five subjects, with a pass in English and a minimum of three credits, including one credit in MC at the NSC level in the same session.

Educational Resources

The Mauritius Institute of Education (MIE) has developed the teaching and learning program for the MC A-Level, including prescribed and recommended textbooks, to ensure alignment with assessment objectives and expected outcomes. These materials are available online.

Schools are encouraged to familiarize themselves with these resources and ensure that students have access to the prescribed textbooks. Literature books will be communicated at a later date.

Furthermore, it is noted that no minimum number of students is required for a school to offer the MC A-Level. Grouping of students and teachers may be considered based on needs.

Options

Two options are available for students wishing to incorporate MC at the main level:

Option 1:

Students can choose the MC A-Level in a traditional combination of three A Levels and two AS Levels. They will receive a General Certificate of Education (GCE) for the subjects taken with Cambridge, as well as a separate certificate issued by the University of Mauritius for the MC. Possible combinations include:

  • 2 Cambridge A Levels + MC at NSC A-Level + 2 Cambridge AS Levels (including AS English General Paper)
  • 1 Cambridge A Level + Cambridge Advanced Professional in IT + MC at NSC A-Level + 2 Cambridge AS Levels (including AS Global Perspectives). However, these students will not be eligible for the Higher School Certificate (HSC) Group Award, as the MC is not included in the Cambridge International AS & A Level program.

Option 2:

To maintain eligibility for the HSC or HSC Pro, several combinations are proposed:

  • 2 Cambridge A Levels + MC A-Level + 3 Cambridge AS Levels (including AS English General Paper)
  • 3 Cambridge A Levels + MC A-Level + 2 Cambridge AS Levels (including AS English General Paper)
  • 1 Cambridge A Level + MC A-Level + Cambridge Advanced Professional in IT + 3 Cambridge AS Levels (including AS Global Perspectives)
  • 2 Cambridge A Levels + MC A-Level + Cambridge Advanced Professional in IT + 2 Cambridge AS Levels (including AS Global Perspectives)

In this framework, students will meet the requirements for obtaining the HSC/HSC Pro, receive the corresponding Cambridge diploma, and the MC A-Level will be issued separately by the University of Mauritius (UoM).
