Storm Fytia: Extreme Heat Conditions in Mauritius and Rodrigues
The moderate tropical storm, Fytia, which was located east of Madagascar, intensified into a strong tropical storm overnight.
"At 10 AM this morning, it was situated around 21.4 degrees south and 52.4 degrees east, approximately 530 km west-southwest of Mauritius. Fytia is moving at a speed of 15 km/h towards the southeast," stated the Vacoas weather station in its "Weather Outlook" published at 11 AM on Monday, February 2nd.
According to the meteorological service's forecasts, the presence of Fytia southwest of the Mascarene Islands will establish a flow of warm and humid air from the north over our region. Temperatures in Mauritius and Rodrigues are expected to be above normal, and extreme heat conditions could persist until Thursday, February 5th. The public is advised to stay hydrated regularly.
Fytia is expected to maintain its trajectory southeastward, leading to the formation of a moisture convergence zone near Mauritius starting this evening and continuing until February 5th. The associated active clouds could cause scattered showers accompanied by thunderstorms.
