Worrying Increase in Cancer Cases in Mauritius

The Minister of Health, Anil Bachoo, highlighted that the number of cancer cases has reached alarming proportions, noting that the situation is particularly concerning regarding breast cancer. He added that the government is allocating significant funds for treatments, but the priority remains on prevention.

Additionally, Anil Bachoo announced that screening and awareness campaigns will be conducted by the Non-Communicable Diseases unit.

It is worth noting that according to the National Cancer Registry, 3,362 new cases were recorded in 2024: 1,471 in men and 1,891 in women. The report also states that there were 1,649 cancer-related deaths in the same year.
