Understanding the New Import Duty of Rs 139.35 per Kilogram for Commercial Goods: MRA's Explanation

Passengers are informed that starting February 10, 2026, freight costs will be included in calculating the value of commercial goods imported and transported in accompanied luggage for tax purposes, at a rate of $3 per kilogram (Rs 139.35 per kilogram or part thereof). According to Rajendra Ramnarain, head of the customs department at the MRA, this measure aims to better reflect the actual value of imported goods. Travelers are urged to be cautious regarding the importation of commercial items in their personal luggage. In a public notice issued this Wednesday, the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) reminds that all commercial goods carried in accompanied luggage—covering both carry-on and checked bags—must be declared at the "red channel" upon arrival. These goods will be held and then transferred to the PATS freight warehouse for customs clearance procedures. Passengers are also advised to pack commercial items separately from their personal belongings, in secure suitcases or parcels, clearly labeled with their names and addresses to facilitate customs processing.
