Death of a Patient Suspected of Having MERS Virus: Autopsy Concludes 'Chest Infection'

An autopsy performed on the patient who passed away this morning in the isolation unit of Souillac Hospital determined that the cause of death was a "chest infection." The individual, identified as 65-year-old Nizam Bhugloo from The Vale, had been admitted to Rose-Belle Hospital on Monday due to a respiratory infection and was later transferred to the isolation unit in Souillac due to a deterioration in his health. He exhibited breathing difficulties, fever, and a persistent cough.

Health authorities suspected that he contracted the MERS virus following a recent trip to Saudi Arabia, where he had performed Umrah. He also suffered from several comorbidities, including heart problems. The death occurred around 5 AM.

At this stage, the Ministry of Health specifies that Mauritians traveling to Saudi Arabia are required to be vaccinated against meningitis, thus ruling out that possibility.

It is important to note that MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome), also known as Middle East respiratory syndrome, is a respiratory illness caused by a coronavirus. MERS-CoV was first identified in 2012, particularly in Saudi Arabia and Jordan.
