The Champ de Mars Pulsates with the National Holiday

Mauritius celebrated on March 12 its 58th Independence Day and the 34th Republic Day during a solemn ceremony at Champ de Mars in Port Louis. The celebration was attended by the guest of honor, Dr. Patrick Herminie, the President of Seychelles. Prime Minister Dr. Navin Ramgoolam and President Dharam Gokhool were also present.

Before joining the official celebrations, the Seychellois head of state made several symbolic visits in the morning. He first visited the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden, one of the country's most iconic historical sites. He then toured the Aapravasi Ghat, a UNESCO World Heritage site rich in history that marks the arrival of indentured laborers in Mauritius. The visit continued at the Intercontinental Museum of Slavery, a memorial dedicated to the history of slavery in the Indian Ocean and the construction of Mauritian identity.

The official ceremony at Champ de Mars began around 4 PM with the most solemn moment of the day: the raising of the national flag. It soared into the skies of Port Louis. In an atmosphere filled with pride and patriotism, the national anthem resonated, echoed by the public in a deeply emotional moment. The traditional cannon fire then rang out, officially marking the start of the celebrations and announcing the beginning of various displays and the ceremonial parade.

Around the official podium, there were government members, municipal councilors, representatives of the diplomatic corps, as well as many guests and members of the public.

Impressive Show

Following the ceremonial proceedings, the public was treated to an impressive aerial display. The Mauritian Police Helicopter Squadron put on remarkable demonstrations in the skies above Port Louis. The participation of the Indian Navy was notable, with their aerial maneuvers receiving loud applause. The National Coast Guard also took part in these displays, adding a maritime dimension.

On the ground, the ceremony continued with the traditional parade of various law enforcement and public service units. The different police units marched with discipline and precision in front of the official podium, showcasing the professionalism of the country's security forces.

The parade also honored the firefighters, who saluted the official podium to the applause of the audience. Several other organizations participated in this parade, including the Mauritius Revenue Authority.

One of the moments most appreciated by the public was the performance of the police K-9 Unit, whose specially trained dogs showcased their skills during impressive exercises, thrilling the spectators.

The day concluded in a festive atmosphere with a vibrant cultural show, highlighting the artistic richness and cultural diversity of the country. Artists and cultural groups shared a moment of camaraderie to wrap up this day dedicated to the history, identity, and unity of the Mauritian nation.
