Safe Case Affair: The Role of the Informant Discussed

The hearing of Inspector Ramdoo from Police Headquarters was a significant part of Monday's proceedings in the trial against Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam at the Financial Crimes Division of the Intermediate Court. The witness was called in relation to a motion for abuse of process filed by the defense, which is based on allegations of 'misconduct' by the executive and political vendetta.

During questioning by the prosecutor, Mr. Nataraj Muneesamy, Inspector Ramdoo presented a sworn affidavit dated March 26, 2026, to explain the delays in the investigation. He recalled that the inquiry began on February 6, 2015, following a search at Navin Ramgoolam's residence in Vacoas.

During cross-examination, Ramgoolam's lead attorney, Mr. Robin Ramburn, Senior Counsel, mentioned public statements made by the late Sir Anerood Jugnauth and media elements that, according to him, could have influenced the investigation. When asked if leaks to the press, particularly images of money safes aired on national television, could 'poison the mind,' Inspector Ramdoo acknowledged having seen those images but indicated that no internal investigation had been initiated regarding these disclosures.

Another point raised concerned the role of an informant who was the source of the inquiry. The witness admitted that he had not recorded any meeting with this informant in a Diary Book, clarifying that it was based on 'intelligence' rather than a formal approach.

The hearing will resume at 2 PM.
