Heartfelt Cry from the MMM: The Dismissal of Fourteen Municipal Councillors
The Mauritian Militant Movement (MMM) took a decisive step in reorganizing its ranks during a press conference held on Saturday, April 18. Reza Uteem announced the unanimous adoption of an expulsion motion presented by Secretary General Rajesh Bhagwan and seconded by Deputy Leader Ajay Gunness. This decision, stemming from the central committee, aims to sanction fourteen elected municipal officials spread across several strategic districts on the island. He emphasized that this measure is part of a desire to maintain internal cohesion within the party in light of recent political challenges faced by the mauves.
The list of revoked members affects several urban strongholds, including Port-Louis with the departures of Ms. Mootoosamy from Ward 1, Mr. Drack from Ward 6, and Mr. Olivier from Ward 8. In Rose-Hill, the party parts ways with Messrs. Miniandee and Calcateea from Ward 1, Ms. Batour from Ward 2, and Messrs. Jhummun and Ramsamy from Ward 3. The city of Curepipe is also impacted by the dismissal of Mr. Gendah and Ms. Charles Jhoomuck from Ward 1, and Ms. Philips from Ward 2. Finally, in Quatre-Bornes, councillors Mr. Etienne from Ward 1, Mr. Manikon from Ward 2, and Ms. Pierre-Bellerose from Ward 3 have been officially expelled, thus altering the local balance of power.
This wave of dismissals marks a significant break from the results of the previous municipal elections where the party had shown solid performance. Reza Uteem concluded his enumeration with a numerical assessment of the current situation within regional administrations. He stated: "Out of the 55 municipal councillors we had in the elections… 54 were elected and 14 have been revoked by the central committee today of the MMM…"
