Dr. Modun, 77, Attacked at Home by Two Criminals: His Testimony

This is the second time he has been a victim of theft. The first incident dates back to May 2022. On Saturday, Dr. Ramesh Modun, 77 years old and working privately, was targeted in a robbery with aggravating circumstances. Two individuals approached his home in Coromandel, near Beau-Bassin, and attacked him.

"They asked for help. Being sensitive to this situation, I wanted to assist them. But it was a setup to mislead me," he shared this Monday afternoon from a private clinic, where he remains under medical observation.

It was around 9:45 AM when the events unfolded. The doctor was at home when a horn sounded in his yard, catching his attention. He stepped outside and saw an individual near a car. The man approached him with a pretext intended to evoke his compassion: he claimed that a relative was seriously ill and hospitalized in a clinic.

The man handed the doctor a bottle of water, asking him to fill it. Unaware of his intentions, the doctor agreed and went to his kitchen. At that moment, the individual, accompanied by an accomplice, entered the house. The situation quickly escalated: one of the suspects grabbed a kitchen knife to threaten the doctor and demand money. They then assaulted him.

Under the threat of the weapon, Dr. Modun was forced to hand over cash. The criminals took a sum including 14,000 rupees, foreign currency, and an additional amount of 70,000 rupees. Before fleeing, they bound the doctor to a sofa with a sheet, leaving him injured.

Although the residence was equipped with a surveillance system, it had been sabotaged before the theft, indicating a premeditated act according to investigators.

Thanks to the cameras from the Safe City network, the vehicle used by the suspects - a red Nissan Micra - was quickly located. An operation was conducted in the Camp Levieux area, near Barkly. This intervention led to the arrest of a man and his partner. During her interrogation, she provided crucial information, implicating her brother and an accomplice as the users of the vehicle at the time of the crime: "Sir, my brother and his friend took that car last night until today around noon. They might be the ones who did that, I don't know anything about it, sir," she told the police.

The investigation is now in the hands of the CID of Coromandel and continues. According to police sources, the two main suspects have already been identified. One of them is already facing a complaint for assault and theft against his mother in Moka last Friday morning.
