Jean-Maurice Jean-Pierre Ends Hunger Strike After Meeting with Shakeel Mohamed
He will celebrate his 68th birthday this Thursday. On Wednesday, Jean-Maurice Jean-Pierre was on his fifth day of a hunger strike, initiated outside the Saint-Louis Cathedral, to protest what he describes as "historical injustices" related to land dispossession in Mauritius.
In the evening, he ended his protest following a meeting with the Minister of Lands and Housing, Shakeel Mohamed.
"I informed him of all the procedures initiated since last year to obtain the necessary approval to present the case before the Cabinet and to decide on the direction to take for the implementation of the Justice and Truth report, including the establishment of a tribunal and budgetary aspects, among others. He received the necessary information," explained Shakeel Mohamed.
"He handed me an official letter. We reviewed it together. I trust him," said Jean-Maurice Jean-Pierre.
In the afternoon, this resident of Pointe-aux-Sables indicated to www.defimedia.info that he aimed to draw the authorities' attention to the harm suffered, as he believes, by several families over generations through his hunger strike.
The president of the Justice and Truth Association laments that no concrete measures have been established so far to address the demands raised by his movement. He calls for the introduction of a law titled "Restitution and Historical Justice Act," which he believes would address issues of land dispossession within a legal framework.
Jean-Maurice Jean-Pierre also mentioned that he has already submitted a document to the Ministry of Lands and Housing, along with correspondence requesting the Prime Minister to introduce this proposal in Parliament.
