Triolet Mediclinic Establishes a Center Dedicated to Diabetes and Vascular Health
After the opening of the first Diabetes and Vascular Health Centre at Dr A. G. Jeetoo Hospital in Port-Louis in January, a second facility of this kind was inaugurated on Wednesday, April 22, at the Mediclinic in Triolet. This new center aims to enhance the care provided to individuals suffering from diabetes and vascular complications while promoting early screening and prevention.
The center combines several services under one roof. Among these are diabetic retinopathy screening, a therapeutic education room for patients, family planning services, dietary consultations, and a specialized clinic for diabetic foot care.
According to Health Minister Anil Bachoo, the goal is to enable better detection of complications related to diabetes, improve patient follow-up, and reduce the risks of serious health issues associated with the disease. "Diabetes remains one of the major public health challenges in Mauritius. Approximately one in five adults lives with this condition, and one in three diabetic individuals is still unaware of their illness. This often delays diagnosis and increases the risks of complications such as kidney failure, blindness, or amputations," he explained during the inauguration.
Early Screening
The minister emphasized the need to strengthen prevention efforts. He stated that new measures will be implemented to encourage early screening and support individuals at risk. Structured programs will be offered to newly diagnosed patients to help them better manage their condition and, in some cases, achieve remission.
Local Government Minister Ranjiv Woochit was also present. He highlighted the importance of better coordination between health organizations and local authorities. He suggested that closer collaboration at the community level is essential to improve awareness of non-communicable diseases and encourage preventive actions.
