GRA: Veeshal Chumroo Resigns from Presidency, Bheekhee Takes Interim Role

Veeshal Chumroo has resigned from his position as chairman of the Gambling Regulatory Authority (GRA). This decision takes effect immediately, as of Friday, April 24, 2026. Vishal Chumroo confirmed the news and mentioned that he informed Prime Minister Dr. Navin Ramgoolam, although he did not wish to comment on the reasons for his departure.

Following a special meeting held in the evening, board members ensured the continuity of the authority's operations. Mahensingh Bheekhee has been appointed to serve as the interim head of the institution.

A current board member and representative of the Ministry of Finance, he will carry out these interim duties while awaiting the official appointment of a new chairman by the relevant authorities.

In recent days, Veeshal Chumroo has been at the center of controversies. He is notably mentioned in a case involving the alleged use of a Porsche owned by a bookmaker, which he reportedly drove for several days as part of a test for a potential purchase from a dealership. This matter has also been reported to the Financial Crimes Commission.

A lawyer by profession, he took over the leadership of the GRA in January 2025.
