Starting May 1st: New Rules to Combat Energy Waste

Starting May 1, 2026, new regulations will come into force in Mauritius to limit the consumption of electricity deemed non-essential. The Energy Efficiency (Control of Non-Essential Grid-Powered Activities) Regulations 2026 will apply to non-residential customers of the Central Electricity Board until November 1, 2026.

Specifically, several uses will be prohibited: decorative lighting, façade illumination for aesthetic purposes, illuminated advertising signs, air conditioning in unoccupied or improperly used commercial spaces, decorative fountains, and outdoor sports facility lighting outside of usage periods.

Essential services will remain exempt: hospitals, emergency services, public lighting, airports and ports, water and sanitation networks, energy production sites, as well as radio and television broadcasting services.

These measures are part of a national strategy aimed at streamlining energy consumption and fostering a culture of energy efficiency across the island.
