Violation of the ICT Act: Aruna Devi Gangoosingh Found Guilty by Intermediate Court

Aruna Devi Gangoosingh was found guilty by the Intermediate Court for violating the ICT Act on Tuesday. She was accused of posting a video on her Facebook page on April 10, 2021, which contained disrespectful and insulting remarks towards the Mauritian population. This resident of Rivière-des-Créoles had pleaded not guilty. According to Magistrate Zaynah Essop, the remarks made were offensive and disgusting by Mauritian standards of morality and decency. She also noted that some of the terms used had sexual connotations in the Mauritian context. The case will be called again on May 7 for sentencing pleas.
