Judicial Inquiry: A Prison Officer Recalls His Last Conversation with John Mick Martingale

On Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at the Rose-Hill court, the judicial inquiry into the death of John Mick Martingale continued with the testimony of Emmanuel Constant, a Prison Officer.

Emmanuel Constant, assigned to Beau-Bassin prison, explained that he participated in a search of cell 71 on the instruction of the Assistant Superintendent of Prisons, Ramtolla, to locate a mobile phone. He acknowledged that no information had been communicated to the control room beforehand, clarifying that it fell under his supervisor's "discretion."

The witness claims he entered the cell "alone" and had a "civilized" conversation with John Mick Martingale.

According to him, the inmate ultimately handed over the phone and its accessories without any resistance.

The case has been adjourned until May 6, 2026.
