[PMQT] Human Trafficking: 26 Cases Reported Since 2024, 2,138 Foreigners Arrested for Illegal Status

During the Prime Minister’s Question Time (PMQT) on April 28, 2026, Navin Ramgoolam reported a concerning rise in human trafficking in Mauritius linked to the increasing number of foreign workers. He revealed that 26 cases of human trafficking have been reported from January 1, 2024, to April 24, 2026. Legal action has been initiated in four of these cases: three are currently in court, and one has already resulted in a conviction.

In response to this growing threat, the government is enhancing its legal, institutional, and operational frameworks. The National Action Plan 2022–2026 against human trafficking is being revised with support from the International Organization for Migration. Amendments have also been made to the trafficking laws to increase penalties and expand police investigative powers.

On the ground, surveillance has intensified at the airport and port. Over the past two years, 5,330 passengers have been denied entry to Mauritius for not adhering to procedures or due to suspicions of irregular intentions.

Since January 1, 2026, authorities have conducted 272 enforcement operations, leading to the arrest of 2,138 foreigners in illegal status.

Navin Ramgoolam also highlighted the support systems for victims, including secure housing for men and women, medical and psychological assistance, legal aid, schooling for children accompanying victims, communication with their relatives, and repatriation when necessary.

The Prime Minister emphasized that trafficking cases remain complex and require close support for victims to facilitate legal proceedings and convictions. He assured that Mauritius maintains close collaboration with NGOs, the police, and the IOM to combat this scourge.
